What Causes Reflux

Causes of Acid Reflux
There are several different factors that can cause an infant or a child to experience the symptoms of reflux. * An immature digestive system in infants or a weak LES sphincter can cause food to back up into the esophagus. It is estimated that possibly 50% of infants are born with some degree of reflux, but grow out of it as they mature. Up to 85% of premature infants may be affected by this. * Abnormal esophageal contractions can push acidic stomach contents back into the esophagus causing the symptoms of reflux. * Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) can add to the problems of reflux or cause the symptoms of reflux. If food stays in the stomach too long, it can increase the chances of refluxing. Also, if a person is overly full because of emptying problems, it can cause the symptoms as well. * A hiatal hernia can cause symptoms of reflux, too. * Underlying disorders/diseases can also cause reflux symptoms in children. One or several of these can be a factor in causing the reflux symptoms in your child. There are many different treatments available, and in most cases, infants will outgrow reflux. Testing is being done presently to decide if there is a genetic link to reflux, and many doctors think that there often is. Sometimes, however, reflux can be part of another syndrome with absolutely no genetic factor.
