Brandon’s Story

Brandon was born on July 13, 1999. He was my text book child, who did everything when it was age-appropriate. He was even speaking in sentences that were as long as 17 words and grammatically correct at age 2. He was always healthy and is the family athlete. Give him a sport and he thrives.

Brandon developed environmental allergies in the spring of 2005, and they became so intense in the spring of 2006 that his eyes swelled, his nose was was either constantly plugged or dripping, his throat hurt, his tummy hurt and his lips swelled. The doctors, of course, just kept misdiagnosing him and not helping (no surprises there!), so I took him in to the E.R. The E.R. visit resulted in our doctor being told that Brandon needs a referral to an allergist. That was in June, 2006, and we finally saw the allergist in November, 2006.

When the allergist walked into the room to check on the sites where the allergens had been tested on Brandon’s forearms, his eyes nearly popped out of his head. Brandon has a nasty allergy to all pollens. The doctor had never seen such a nasty skin reaction in such a young child and Brandon is in the worst 1% of those with allergies. We are to try him on the strongest over-the-counter antihistamine, as well as a nasal spray and eye drops from April 1st to July 7th, and again from August 7th until after the first frost. All of that will probably not be enough for the poor little guy, though, and it’s quite likely that he will need to go on allergy shots for the rest of his life.
